As part of our ongoing Capital Improvement Plan, and in line with the Asset Management Plan developed to support the planned capital expenditures for infrastructure improvements, the VDE contracted with KA Stevens & Son (KAS) for two projects this summer. The first is the installation of a new water main to connect the existing water main in Clearwater Drive to the main in Bogie Place. This will provide a second route for water to reach the eastern half of Eastman. The second project is the construction of a parallel line next to the existing water main on Wellfield Road. This will provide redundancy for our entire water supply system should a failure occur in the more than 50-year-old primary water main.
What to Expect:
Clearwater Drive to Bogie Place
KAS will be staging equipment at the end of Clearwater Dr, by the trail entrance to Johns Glen. The first stage of this project will begin this coming week, with initial access clearing and excavation. The connection to Bogie Pl will be made using directional drilling of HDPE pipe, with the borings going under the Eastman Brook marsh area between Clearwater Dr and Bogie Pl. The drilling will be performed from the Clearwater Dr end and the HDPE pipe will be pulled through from the Bogie Pl end. KAS expects to tie into the existing water mains in the vicinity of Bogie Pl during the week of August 22. Parking for John’s Glen will remain accessible during this project; however, please be aware of the equipment and park in the designated areas.
Wellfield Road
Excavation and construction for the parallel main will begin during the week of August 5, starting at the south end of Wellfield Rd adjacent to the VDEs water treatment plant. Wellfield Rd traffic will be limited to one lane in the immediate area of construction as the Stevens crew moves up Wellfield Rd to Buck Common, the end point for this new water main. The entirety of Wellfield Rd will not be limited to one lane, but instead only the section where construction activity is taking place each day. This will impact morning/evening commuter traffic – please expect flaggers and slight traffic delays. This project is expected to last through mid-November for the water main construction, paving, and project wrap-up.
We anticipate weekly communications from KA Stevens with project updates, and those will be relayed to the community as they are received.
